What & When is the City Nature Challenge?

The City Nature Challenge is a world-wide effort for people to find and document plants and wildlife. While most years the challenge is a competition, this year the “CNC” organizers are focusing on the healing power of nature to allow people to document their local biodiversity in whatever way they can. Recording observations and identifying species is easy with the use of the iNaturalist app so that anyone can participate! It takes place Friday April 24 through Monday April 27th.

Why participate in the City Nature Challenge?

By participating in the City Nature Challenge, not only do you connect with, and learn more about your local nature, but you can also make your city a better place for you and other living things! Knowing what plants and animals are in our city and where can help us study and protect them. This is best done by working together as a community to find and document nature in our area.

How can we participate in the City Nature Challenge?

Start by visiting iNaturalist.org to register and download the app from the AppStore or Google Play.

Registration and some data sharing is required. Taking photos on a smart device geolocates where the photo of the plant or animal observed is taken and shares that data with iNaturalist. By sharing this data you receive feedback from iNaturalist artificial intelligence, comparing your photo with millions of others to identify it as well as actual scientists, experts, and other naturalists claims to what you are likely observing.

How can I learn even more about the City Nature Challenge and ways to participate?

Thanks to the girl scouts from troop 72046 at Pine Glen School for designing these flyers!
